Automated URL Submissions: The Easy Way Out?
Automated URL submissions seem almost too good to be true. “Submit to 1,000,000 search engines and directories with just the click of a button,” says one automated submissions company. “Optimize and submit your site to 750,000 search engines for only $15 per month,” says another.
Just like the VISA ads we’ve all seen for the last few years, if life were like that you would need your SEO expert.
Why Automated URL Submissions Don’t Work
As you might have suspected, in order to submit to hundreds of thousands of search engines and directories, automated submission software works on a template system. You enter your website information into the template and boom, your meta-tags are “optimized” and your URL is sent out to every quasi-search engine and directory in existence.
The problem is that 1) not all directories take automated submissions, 2) each directory has its own ranking algorithms, and 3) these algorithms are being changed all the time. Therefore, even if your meta tags are optimized for one or two search engines right now (if those search engines accept your automated submission), they most certainly won’t be optimized just a few months down the road.
Other reasons why automated submission doesn’t work:
- Automated submitting to directories in not advisable, as your categorization will not be done effectively.
- Automated submission software may repeatedly SPAM search engines and could cause your site to be penalized or blacklisted.
- Automated submission software can make the task seem easier, but it is not the most effective method. Hiring an expert for manually submitting to crawlers: Google, Yahoo, etc. is still the best method to achieve high rankings.
When Automated URL Submissions Do Work
Automated URL submissions are only recommended when:
- You have a very large website (thousands of pages) and need many pages indexed.
- You update those thousands of pages frequently and therefore require frequent resubmissions.
The above doesn’t really apply to too many people, and even then an SEO expert is recommended. Why? For a very large website, the SEO can still concentrate on gaining and maintaining a high ranking for any high profile pages on the site. From those pages, website visitors can access the additional information necessary. It is these additional pages that could use automated URL submission, but the main pages should be left to your SEO expert.
